While there's a strong appetite to make a period piece, most of the details have already been lifted from the novels, with varying degrees of success (IMO too much of Gustav Graves ruined any chance of making a proper Moonraker, and so on).

With a new lead actor comes a new chapter, and they can approach it however they like. Whether it's CIA / NSA agents, trained astronauts, nuclear physicists and so on, they added more than just being a pretty face. No Time To Die received a lot of flak in the lead up to release for being 'woke', when it reality the franchise has prided itself on strong female characters throughout its existence. There was much animosity towards the idea of a female 007, it's hard to tell if that demographic would accept a female 006, or 008 either. Ironically, the biggest fear of some now is change - some would prefer to have a Bond that's misogynistic, and a host of women who exist purely as somewhere for him to park himself overnight. tinkering with the formula to keep it up to date, or at least try and dig into the fears of audiences at the time. Brosnan himself was a great choice but didn't get the scripts worthy of his talent IMO.Īs a franchise, it's done a broadly good job of remaining relevant i.e.

What makes me sad is that growing up at the time I did, the Brosnan era was the one I got to see at the cinema, and those films were generally quite unremarkable save for some excellent set pieces. I think I then saw A View To A kill and then Live and Let Die followed by Goldfinger. I suspect because I had early exposure to various actors in the role, I didn't really have a preference. After that I started recording each Bond on VHS as they were shown at Christmas or Bank Holidays. It had a trailer for The Witches Of Eastwick that was narrated by Paul Gambaccini I think. My first Bond experience was when I was given an ex-rental VHS of The Living Daylights in what must have been 1990-1991 (I'd have been 5-6 years old then).
